Gita Press, Gorakhpur - An Introduction

Gita Press' - This name in itself is its complete introduction. This institution is the very image of the divine resolve which worked as the motivating force for its establishment. Gita Press was established in 1923 A.D. in order to serve humanity for truth, love and peace. It is a unit of the Gobind Bhawan Karyalaya, Kolkata, registered under the Societies Registration Act, 1860, (presently governed by the West Bengal Societies Act, 1960). Since 1923 it has been propagating and promoting morality and spirituality through its literature throughout the world.

The founder of this institution was revered Shri Jayadayalji Goyandka (Sethji), a God-realized soul. He resorted to the Gita and started publishing moral and spiritual books in order to promote and propagate virtuous and righteous ideas and feelings on a wide scale.

Towards the fulfilment of object of the Gita Press, the blessed soul Late Shri Hanuman Prasadji Poddar (Bhaiji), the first editor of the spiritual monthly 'Kalyan' extended his whole hearted contribution to this holy enterprise. His lively message given through the 'Kalyan' is indeed unforgettable.

The main objective of the Gita Press is to publish the spiritual, moral and character-building books and magazines at subsidised prices, lower than their actual cost.

Out of 1744 current publications of the Gita Press, 826 are in Sanskrit and Hindi. The rest of the publications are in English and other Indian languages mainly Gujarati, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannad, Oriya and Bengali. The Press also brings out two monthly magazines - 'Kalyan' in Hindi and 'Kalyana-Kalpataru' in English. 'Kalyan' has a subscribership of 2.14 lakh. Through these magazines devotion, knowledge, righteousness, dispassion, good conduct. morality. spirituality, virtuous feelings and other divine traits are inculcated in people. Every year the first issue of these magazines is the main and special issue and the remaining eleven are monthly issues.

The publications of the Gita Press are available at its 19 branches, 42 station-stalls and with thousands of booksellers. New publications are advertised in 'Kalyan' and 'Yuga-Kalyan' etc. from time to time. These publications are also displayed and sold in book-fairs, book-exhibitions, and religious fairs etc.

This institution neither solicits any form of donation nor accepts commercial advertisements in its magazines.

Till date, Gita Press had published 1621 lakh copies of ShrimadBhagvadGita, 1173 lakh copies of RamCharitManas and approx. 9000 lakh other books including 1142 lakh copies of Gita in Indian languages.

For the visitors to the Gita Press, its main entrance is a prime attraction. It represents temple architecture styles from around the country and has as its main mascot, the chariot of Lord Krishna and Arjuna at the time of the Gita-sermon.

In the Lila-Chitra-Mandira (Art Gallery), hand paintings have been exhibited. These include paintings and pictures of different Gods and Goddesses and are based on the sports played by Lord Ram and Krishna and some other incarnations. This Chitra-Mandira contains entire Gita engraved on the marble slabs on all the four inner walls.

 

गीताप्रेस, गोरखपुर का संक्षिप्त परिचय

'गीताप्रेस' के संस्थापक ब्रह्मलीन परम श्रद्धेय श्री जयदयालजी गोयन्दका [सेठजी] का जीवनव्रत था - गीता प्रचार। उनकी मंगल अभिलाषा थी कि गीता से जो प्रकाश उनको मिला है वह मानवमात्र को मिले। इस उद्देश्य की पूर्ति के लिए 'गीताप्रेस' की स्थापना विक्र्म संवत 1980 [सन् 1923 ई0] के मई महीने में हुई। गोबिन्दभवन कार्यालय, कोलकाता के नाम से सोसाइटी पंजीयन अधिनियम के अन्तर्गत पंजीकृत गीताप्रेस आरम्भ से ही एक धार्मिक संस्था के रूप में प्रतिष्ठित रही है।

इस का संचालन संस्था के टृस्ट-बोर्ड के नियन्त्रण में होता है। गीताप्रेस का मुख्य कार्य सस्ते-से-सस्ते मूल्य पर सत्साहित्य का प्रचार और प्रसार करना है। पुस्तकों के मूल्य प्रायः लागत से कम रख्रे जाते हैं, परन्तु इसके लिये यह संस्था किसी प्रकार के चन्दे या आर्थिक सहायता की याचना नहीं करती।

मार्च 2014 तक गीताप्रेस के द्वारा विभिन्न संस्करणों में जो पुस्तकें प्रकाशित हुई हैं - उनकी संख्या इस प्रकार है -

श्रीमद्भगवद्गीता - 1142 लाख, श्रीरामचरितमानस एवं तुलसी-साहित्य - 922 लाख, पुराण, उपनिष्द आदि ग्रंथ - 227 लाख, महिलाओं एवं बालकोपयोगी - 1055 लाख, भक्तचरित्र एवं भजनमाला - 1244 लाख, अन्य प्रकाशन - 1235 लाख, कुल 58 करोड़ 25 लाख। गतवर्ष लगभग रुपये 5009 लाख मूल्य की पुस्तकें उपलब्ध करायी गयीं, इसके लिये लगभग 4530 टन कागज का उपयोग किया गया।

गीताप्रेस के लगभग 1744 वर्तमान प्रकाशनों में लगभग 826 प्रकाशन संस्कृत एवं हिन्दी के हैं। शेष प्रकाशन मुख्यतया गुजराती, मराठी, तेलुगु, बँगला, ओड़िया, तमिल, कन्न्ड़, अंग्रेजी आदि भारतीय भाषाओं में हैं। श्रीरामचरितमानस आदि का प्रकाशन नेपाली भाषा में भी है।

गीताप्रेस की पुस्तकों एवं कल्याण का प्रचार 19 निजी थोक, 4 फुटकर पुस्तक दुकानों, 41 स्टेशन-स्टालों तथा हजारों पुस्तक-विक्रेताओं के माध्यम से होता है।

'कल्याण', 'युग-कल्याण' एवं कल्याण-कल्पतरु' - गीताप्रेस द्वारा तीन मासिक पत्र 'कल्याण' तथा 'युग-कल्याण' हिन्दी में एवं 'कल्याण-कल्पतरु' अंग्रेजी में प्रकाशित किये जाते हैं।

'कल्याण' की वर्तमान समय में लगभग 2,15,000 प्रतियाँ छपती हैं। वर्ष का पहला अंक किसी विषय का विशेषांक होता है। जनवरी 2015 का विशेषांक - 'सेवा अंक' है। 'कल्याण' भक्ति, ज्ञान, वैराग्य, धर्म, सदाचार एवं साधन-संबंधी सामग्री द्वारा जन-जन को कल्याण के पथ पर अग्रसरित करने का निरन्तर प्रयास कर रहा है। 'कल्याण-कल्पतरु' के अबतक 59 विशेषांक निकल चुके हैं। अक्टूबर 2014 का विशेषांक 'Sakti Number' है।

नित्यलीलालीन परम श्रद्धेय श्री हनुमानप्रसादजी पोद्दार (भाईजी) ने आजीवन 'कल्याण' एवं 'कल्याण-कल्पतरु' का सम्पादन-कार्य किया। महात्मा गांधीजी की सम्मति के अनुसार 'कल्याण' एवं 'कल्याण-कल्पतरु' में आरम्भ से ही न तो कोई विज्ञापन छापा जाता है और न पुस्तकों की समालोचना ही की जाती है।

गीताप्रेस मुख्य द्वार - गीताद्वार की रचना के प्रत्येक पाद में भारतीय संस्कृति, धर्म एवं कला की गरिमा को सन्निहित करने का प्रयास किया गया है। इस मुख्य द्वार के निर्माण में देश की गौरवमयी प्राचीन कलाओं तथा विख्यात प्राचीन मन्दिरों से प्रेरणा ली गयी है और इनकी विभिन्न शैलियों का आंशिक रूप में दिग्दर्शन कराने का प्रयास किया गया है।

लीला-चित्र-मंदिर - गीता प्रेस के लीला-चित्र-मंदिर में भगवान श्रीराम और भगवान श्रीकृष्ण की लीलाओं के रमणीय 684 चित्रों के अतिरिक्त प्रतिभावान चित्रकारों द्वारा बनाये हुए अनेक हस्त-निर्मित चित्रों का संग्रह है। चित्र-मन्दिर की दीवाल पर संगमरमर के पत्थरों पर सम्पूर्ण श्रीमद्भगवद्गीता एवं संत-भक्तों के 700 से अधिक दोहे तथा वाणियाँ खुदी हुई हैं। इस विशाल मण्डप में प्रतिवर्ष 'गीता-जयन्ती' के परम पावन अवसर पर बृहत् गीता-प्रदर्शनी एवं समय-समय पर प्रवचन तथा अन्य धार्मिक कार्यक्रमों का आयोजन होता है।

पुस्तकों का प्रदर्शन - गीताप्रेस, गोरखपुर के मुख्य द्वार के सामने निर्मित वातानुकूलित पुस्तक-दुकान में विभिन्न भाषाओं में स्वप्रकाशित पुस्तकों के भव्य प्रदर्शन एवं बिक्री की व्यवस्था है।

'गीताप्रेस का मुख्य-द्वार' एवं 'लीला-चित्र-मंदिर' गोरखपुर का एक महत्वपूर्ण दर्शनीय आकर्षक स्थल है। इनका उद्घाटन तत्कालीन राष्ट्र्पति डाँ राजेन्द्र प्रसाद जी ने अपने कर-कमलों द्वारा 29 अप्रैल 1955 को किया था।
